If you haven’t built a website before, registering a blog name for your website involves three steps:

When it comes to naming a blog, I like to live by one motto:

Put simply, your blog name should reflect your long-term goal. Communicate it by creating a mission statement — that’s how your future readers can empathize with you and support your cause.

Think about what you want your blog to achieve — not just for you, but for your readers as well. 

For now, don’t worry about writing anything fancy. Just be as descriptive as possible when describing your goals.

To make your mission statement more actionable and meaningful, you need to be specific.

The final piece you need for a brilliant mission statement is a simple introduction.

Keep in mind that you can use your mission statement as a springboard when writing an “About Me” page. 

Deciding on how you’ll introduce yourself is also a great help when picking a blog name. It will help you think up unique and personalized keywords, like “student,” “minimalist,” “simple,” and “frugal.”

There are several blogs I know that did this right.  Some examples are A Mind “Full” Mom, The Stingy Vegan, Frugal Foodie Mama, and Brown Eyed Baker.

In any case, it should be easy for you to come up with a simple statement about yourself. When done, you’re ready to move on to the next step.

2. Handpicking keywords from your statement

Obviously, you can’t use your entire mission statement as a name for your blog.

You’ll need to trim it down to ideally three words or less. That’s the upper limit that most of the top food blogs in the industry use.

To demonstrate this, let us review one of the mission statements we can construct with the information above:

After skimming it the first time, here’s a list of the words and phrases that caught my attention:

If you ask me, we already have more than enough keywords to create dozens of food blog names suggestions.

Here are a few keyword combinations I liked:

• Simple Snacks Oven
• Oven Arts
• Homemade Culinary Experiments

Of course, there’s no need to limit yourself to words in your mission statement. 

It’s your food blog’s name, after all, so feel free to add whichever word that pops in your head. This will give you the opportunity to go for more creative food blog names like:

• Busy Bee Oven
• Oven-Baked Arts
• Simple Oven Cookbook
• Busy Student Cooking Guide
• Homemade Desserts Digest

At this point, you should begin to form ideas for the perfect name for your food blog. However, you shouldn’t commit to anything yet. 

You still have time to look for other, spicier words to include in your blog name.

Finding the right name for your food blog is much like writing a masterful headline.

In addition to relevant words and phrases, you should also try to explore other words that add a “wow” factor.

If you’re still not satisfied with the word variety in your would-be blog name, a trick is to look for synonyms. 

It’s easy — just Google any keyword from your mission statement and add the term “synonyms.”

Here’s a quick fact: a lot of popular food blogs creatively use food-related expressions in their domain names. 

Below are a few examples:

• Chocolate Covered Katie 
• Spice Up the Curry

There are also some food blogs that do the opposite. Rather than using a food-related phrase, they take a known idiom and inject a food-related word instead. 

An example of this would be The Woks of Life — from the idiom “walks of life.”

By the way, in the online world, a “domain” isn’t necessarily the same as your blog name. 

Swasthi’s Recipes, for example, uses the domain name “Indian Healthy Recipes”:

While there are no rules against using different domain and website names, it does help certain users remember you more. This will make it easier for users to find your website if they happen to come across your content somewhere.

4. Pairing your blog name with a tagline 

Before you make the final decision for your food blog name, there’s one last thing I’d like to talk about.

It’s true that having a catchy and memorable blog name is helpful. 

However, nobody reads a blog because it has a cool name. 

Ask yourself, do you read a magazine or book because it has a nice name? 

No — you care more about the value you’ll get from the actual content. 

That’s why some food blogs instill their value propositions straight into their website name. 

It’s all about setting the expectations of your target readers before they even read your content. Food bloggers know this and, in turn, utilize blog names that are value-oriented.

For example, here are some food blogs and how their names affect their target audience:

• Good Cheap Eats — This blog name ensures readers that they’ll find delicious meals ahead without spending a fortune. 
• Indian Healthy Recipes — As I’ve mentioned before, Swasthi’s Recipes used a more goal-oriented domain name to lure in readers.
• Simple Green Smoothies — The name “Simple Green Smoothies” is as descriptive as you can get with a blog name.

Long story short, try to use a blog name will give users an idea of what it’s about. If you prefer a branded name, add a tagline to supplement it, like the majority of blogs out there. 

For instance, David Lebovitz uses the tagline “Original Recipes, Books & Life in Paris” to describe his website’s content.

This can help his website draw attention whenever it appears in social media or search engine results. Without the tagline, people who have never heard of David Lebovitz wouldn’t know what his site is about.

As a professional blogger, you should always make room for a little automation to make your workflow more efficient.

Checking the Domain’s Availability

With everything I’ve told you thus far, you should be able to whip up a long list of possible names for your food blog. 

Congratulations!

Before you celebrate, next comes the tedious — sometimes heartbreaking — process of checking their availability. 

The thing is, you can’t claim existing names like “Simple Vegan,” “Minimalistic Baker,” and “International Desserts.” Not only are you blatantly ripping off established brands, chances are the domain name you want is already unavailable.

Sure, you may think that your blog name ideas are completely unique. But with the number of websites and domains already registered on the web, you could be wrong. 

This is especially true if you want the “.com” website, which is recommended due to the reasons I mentioned here.  

The only way to be sure is to use a tool like Domainr to verify its availability. Simply type the domain name you wish to use into the search bar and wait for the results.

Domainr should show you its availability status — along with potential alternatives in case the “.com” address is unavailable.
